Truck Lockout in Westchester: Pickups and Box Trucks
Locked out of a pickup or a box truck, start with the free checks: every cab door, the rear sliding window, the cap window if the bed has one. If the truck is a rental, call the rental company's roadside number before anyone else. If it belongs to a company, call whoever holds the spare. If none of that gets you in, call a locksmith who is close, give the make, model and year, and say whether the engine is running. Larchmont Locksmith NY opens trucks at any hour, and two of our three technicians live in Larchmont, so most of the Sound Shore is a short drive away.
The free checks on a truck
Trucks give you a few more chances than a car does.
- Every cab door. On a crew cab, try both rear doors. They do not always lock with the front ones.
- The rear sliding window. Many pickups have a slider behind the seats. If it was left unlatched, it may slide open from the bed. Do not pry it: the track and the latch break easily.
- The cap or camper shell. A cap with a side window or an unlocked rear hatch can get you into the bed, and sometimes to the slider.
- The spare. A spare at home, on someone else's key ring, or in the office. If it is a company truck, the fleet manager or the owner may have one.
- The app. Some newer trucks can be opened from the maker's phone app if it was set up.
Two things not to try: a wedge in the door frame and a rod through the gap. Truck doors have the same wiring, window motors and airbag sensors as car doors, and a bent frame on a work truck costs more than the lockout.
Keys locked in with the engine running
It is one of the most common truck lockouts. The driver hops out to open a gate or move a cone, the doors lock, and the truck keeps idling.
- In a garage or any enclosed space, get out of it and tell the people nearby. Exhaust builds up.
- On a street or a lot, stay with the truck. A running truck with no one near it invites trouble.
- Watch the fuel. An idling diesel uses fuel steadily. Tell the locksmith how much is in the tank.
Say "the engine is running" in the first sentence of the call. It changes how the call is handled, and a technician who is nearby matters more here than on any other lockout.
Rental trucks and company trucks
Who owns the truck changes who you call first.
A rental truck. The rental agreement usually lists a roadside or breakdown number, and the agreement may say who is allowed to open the truck. Call that number first. If they tell you to use a local locksmith, have the agreement and your ID ready.
A company truck. Expect to show that you are allowed to have it opened. A work ID, the registration and a call to the owner or fleet manager usually settle it. A locksmith who opens a work truck for anyone who asks would open it for a thief too.
The cab, the cargo box and the toolbox are separate locks. Getting into the cab of a box truck does not open the cargo door, which often has its own padlock or handle lock. A bed toolbox has its own key as well. Say on the phone exactly which one you need open.
Why a nearby locksmith beats one from far away
A truck lockout rarely happens somewhere you can wait comfortably. The truck is at a job site with a crew standing around. It is in a loading zone on Mamaroneck Avenue with a time limit. It is blocking a driveway, or it is idling with the keys inside.
Every one of those gets worse with each mile the locksmith has to drive. Distance is the one part of a lockout no one can talk down. A technician coming across the county in traffic on I-95 or the Hutchinson River Parkway is late before he starts.
Two of our technicians live in Larchmont. Mamaroneck and New Rochelle border the village, so a truck on the Boston Post Road in the Village of Mamaroneck or on a downtown street in New Rochelle is close by. The third technician lives at the edge of the Bronx, near Pelham and the New Rochelle side. Our average response is about 25 minutes. A truck lockout is part of our 24/7 lockout service, the same one that covers homes, cars and businesses.
When you call any locksmith, ask where the technician is coming from right now. A listing can say "near you" and still send someone from far away. Here is how to tell a local locksmith from a call centre listing.
What to tell the locksmith on the phone
- Make, model and year, and whether it is a pickup, a box truck or something else.
- Exactly where it is. The street and the nearest corner, the job site address, or the lot.
- Where the keys are. In the ignition, on the seat, in the bed, in the toolbox.
- Whether the engine is running.
- Which lock you need open. Cab, cargo door, toolbox.
- Who owns it. You, a rental company, or your employer.
Ask for the total before work starts. Our service starts at $125, and the truck, the hour and the job decide the rest.
If the key is lost rather than locked inside, the job is a new key, not an opening. Here is what to do about lost car keys at a station lot, and the same steps apply to a truck. For a car with the keys on the seat, the keys locked in car checklist covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith open a pickup truck without damage?
Usually, yes. Locksmiths open truck doors with tools made for vehicle doors and normally do it without damage. Prying the frame or pushing a rod through the gap is how wiring and seals get broken.
I locked the keys in the truck with the engine running. What do I do?
If the truck is in a garage or enclosed space, get out and tell people nearby. Otherwise stay with the truck, note the fuel level and call a nearby locksmith, saying first that the engine is running.
Who should I call if a rental truck locks me out?
Call the rental company's roadside number first, because the agreement may say who can open the truck. If they send you to a local locksmith, have the agreement and your ID ready.
Will opening the cab also open the cargo box or the toolbox?
No. The cab, the cargo door of a box truck and a bed toolbox are separate locks. Tell the locksmith on the phone which ones you need open.
Truck locked with the keys inside? Call (914) 255-6611 and say the make, model and where it is parked.
